Women in Tourism Top 100

In October last year when the UK was considering the potential impacts of another COVID-19 lockdown, Women in Tourism launched our 2020 Top 100 Women In Tourism.

First launched in 2018, the Top 100 is a peer-nominated initiative, created to recognise and celebrate those working within Scotland’s tourism industry.  When we made the announcement, we were hopeful that 2021 would be a brighter year for our important industry. While some headway has been made, everyone at WIT understands and recognises the immense pressures that everyone is still continuing to feel.

For many, awards are often something given to a business or a project; and sometimes to an individual who is the Director, Owner or CEO of an organisation.  For us at Women in Tourism, it was important that you didn’t have to be in a senior position to be recognised – the WIT Top 100 seeks to celebrate those doing amazing things in tourism – from those just starting out, to those who are nearing retirement!  The 2020 Top 100 reflects that and also highlights women from across Scotland.

WIT Top 100 2020 – why we’re celebrating

In 2020 we also recognised someone from outwith Scotland – Kate Nicholls, CEO of Hospitality UK, who has worked tirelessly throughout the pandemic to shine a light on the ongoing impacts that are being felt by businesses of every size.

Why are we celebrating more than one year on?  We were overwhelmed by the response from our winners to their inclusion within the Top 100.  Some of our Top 100 were sadly made redundant in the pandemic; others had family businesses nearly go to the ground and many were on long-term furlough with no end in sight.  The morale boost for everyone came at a much-needed time and gave us an opportunity to cheer (virtually!), and celebrate these amazing leaders, thinkers and passionate women who truly drive our industry.

Join us to celebrate the WIT Top 100 – in-person and virtually

We hope many of you can join us and our Top 100, in Edinburgh, in person, on Monday 13 December 2021. Women in Tourism, like many, are looking at what the future looks like for our organisation. Work on that will begin in the New Year and we look forward to discussions with members and the industry as we evolve and ensure we’re continuing to support those working in tourism.
